After Sustainability

by John Foster, After Sustainability Books available in PDF, EPUB, Kindle, Docs and Mobi Format. Download After Sustainability books, Dangerous climate change is coming. Some people still deny that it is happening. Others refuse to recognise that it is now too late to prevent it. But both these reactions spring from the same source: our pathological attachment to ‘progress’, of which sustainability has been one more version. After Sustainability traces that attachment to its roots in the ways we make sense of ourselves. Original and accessible, this is philosophy on the edge, written for anyone who glimpses our environmental tragedy and cares about our future. Does the challenge to stop pretending offer our only remaining chance? Read this book and make up your own mind.

After Sustainable Cities

by Mike Hodson, After Sustainable Cities Books available in PDF, EPUB, Kindle, Docs and Mobi Format. Download After Sustainable Cities books, A sustainable city has been defined in many ways. Yet, the most common understanding is a vision of the city that is able to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Central to this vision are two ideas: cities should meet social needs, especially of the poor, and not exceed the ability of the global environment to meet needs. After Sustainable Cities critically reviews what has happened to these priorities and asks whether these social commitments have been abandoned in a period of austerity governance and climate change and replaced by a darker and unfair city. This book provides the first comprehensive and comparative analysis of the new eco-logics reshaping conventional sustainable cities discourse and environmental priorities of cities in both the global north and south. The dominant discourse on sustainable cities, with a commitment to intergenerational equity, social justice and global responsibility, has come under increasing pressure. Under conditions of global ecological change, international financial and economic crisis and austerity governance new eco-logics are entering the urban sustainability lexicon – climate change, green growth, smart growth, resilience and vulnerability, ecological security. This book explores how these new eco-logics reshape our understanding of equity, justice and global responsibility, and how these more technologically and economically driven themes resonate and dissonate with conventional sustainable cities discourse. This book provides a warning that a more technologically driven and narrowly constructed economic agenda is driving ecological policy and weakening previous commitment to social justice and equity. After Sustainable Cities brings together leading researchers to provide a critical examination of these new logics and identity what sort of city is now emerging, as well as consider the longer-term implication on sustainable cities research and policy.

by Bob Jickling, Post Sustainability And Environmental Education Books available in PDF, EPUB, Kindle, Docs and Mobi Format. Download Post Sustainability And Environmental Education books, This book provides a critique of over two decades of sustained effort to infuse educational systems with education for sustainable development. Taking to heart the idea that deconstruction is a prelude to reconstruction, this critique leads to discussions about how education can be remade, and respond to the educational imperatives of our time, particularly as they relate to ecological crises and human-nature relationships. It will be of great interest to students and researchers of sociology, education, philosophy and environmental issues.

Post Sustainability

by John Foster, Post Sustainability Books available in PDF, EPUB, Kindle, Docs and Mobi Format. Download Post Sustainability books, The sustainability discourse and policy paradigm have failed to deliver. In particular, they have failed to avert the dangerously disruptive climate change which is now inevitable. So, if there is still a case for some transformed or revitalised version of sustainability, that case must now surely be made in full acknowledgment of deep-seated paradigm-failure to date. But if we really take ourselves to be living in a post-sustainable world, the issue of ‘what next?’ must be faced, and the hard questions no longer shirked. What options for political and personal action will remain open on a tragically degraded planet? How will economic and community life, political and social leadership and education be different in such a world? What will the geopolitics (of crisis, migration and conflict) look like? Where does widespread denial come from, how might it be overcome, and are there any grounds for hope that don’t rest on it? The urgent challenge now is to confront such questions honestly. This collection of essays by thinkers from a diversity of fields including politics, philosophy, sociology, education and religion, makes a start. This book was originally published as a special issue of Global Discourse.

Sustainability Of Rights After Globalisation

by Sabyasachi Basu Ray Chaudhury, Sustainability Of Rights After Globalisation Books available in PDF, EPUB, Kindle, Docs and Mobi Format. Download Sustainability Of Rights After Globalisation books, Sustainability of Rights after Globalisation is the result of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR)-supported research programme, 'Globalisation and Sustainability of Rights'. The thrust of this volume is on various concerns of globalisation and its interface with rights. The book talks about the interconnectedness of globalisation with social and economic systems and how links develop with reference to both polity and common people's movements. The book provides a new way of understanding the constitution of rights with the help of micro-histories drawn from diverse fields, such as environmental rights, law, information, and labour studies in India. The book examines how rights have been redefined in this era of globalisation and how India is still plagued by the constant tension between 'social' yearning for democratic values and 'economic' competition for unhindered profits.

Rebuilding After Disasters

by Gonzalo Lizarralde, Rebuilding After Disasters Books available in PDF, EPUB, Kindle, Docs and Mobi Format. Download Rebuilding After Disasters books, Disasters are not natural. Natural events such as earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, etc. become disasters because of the fragile relations that exist between the natural, human and built environments. Sadly, major disasters will always occur in towns and cities in the developing world where resources are limited, people are vulnerable and needs are particularly great. The prevailing state of emergency challenges thoughtful and sustainable planning and construction. Yet it is possible, in theory and in practice, to construct them in a way that provides a sustainable environment and improved conditions for current and future generations. Rebuilding After Disasters emphasizes the role of the built environment in the re-establishment of lives and sustainable livelihoods after disasters. Expert contributors explain the principal challenges facing professionals and practitioners in the building industry. This book will be of great value to decision makers, students and researchers in the fields of architecture, social sciences, engineering, planning, geography, and disaster recovery.
