I Was The Jukebox Poems

by Sandra Beasley, I Was The Jukebox Poems Books available in PDF, EPUB, Kindle, Docs and Mobi Format. Download I Was The Jukebox Poems books, In I Was the Jukebox, Sandra Beasley eschews the speaker-as-poet convention and unleashes a collection teeming with the inanimate, the anachronistic, and the animal kingdom. She boldly channels figures from wartime and mythological culture; in 'Osiris Speaks' the Egyptian god gains new life as a vagabond: 'I left my heart in San Francisco. / I left my viscera in the Netherlands.' But even the most surreal images always keep one foot in everyday America: 'I left my liver on the 42 Line,' Osiris goes on to admit, 'headed from Farragut Square to the White House.' The nucleus of this collection includes many poems composed during a draft-a-day process referred to on the Web as NaPoWriMo (National Poetry Writing Month), founded by DC-area poet Maureen Thorson and coordinated to coincide with National Poetry Month.

Count The Waves Poems

by Sandra Beasley, Count The Waves Poems Books available in PDF, EPUB, Kindle, Docs and Mobi Format. Download Count The Waves Poems books, “Beasley uses humor and surprise like a scythe, cutting to the root of a matter.”—Washington Post In Count the Waves, Sandra Beasley turns her eclectic imagination to the heart's pursuits. A man and a woman sit at the same dinner table, an ocean of worry separating them. An iceberg sets out to dance. A sword swallower ponders his dating prospects. "The vessel is simple, a rowboat among yachts," the poet observes in "Ukulele." "No one hides a Tommy gun in its case. / No bluesman runs over his uke in a whiskey rage." Beasley's voice is pithy and playful, with a ferocious intelligence that invites comparison to both Sylvia Plath and Dorothy Parker. In one of six signature sestinas, she warns, "You must not use a house to build a home, / and never look for poetry in poems." The collection’s centerpiece is a haunting sequence that engages The Traveler's Vade Mecum, an 1853 compendium of phrases for use by mail, telegraph, or the enigmatic “Instantaneous Letter Writer." Assembled over ten years and thousands of miles, these poems illuminate how intimacy is lost and gained during our travels. Decisive, funny, and as compassionate as she is merciless, Beasley is a reckoning force on the page.

Made To Explode

by Sandra Beasley, Made To Explode Books available in PDF, EPUB, Kindle, Docs and Mobi Format. Download Made To Explode books, "With lacerating honesty, technical mastery, and abiding compassion, Made to Explode offers volatile poems for our volatile times. In her fourth collection, acclaimed poet Sandra Beasley interrogates the landscapes of her life. She probes memories of growing up in Virginia, in Thomas Jefferson's shadow, where liberal affluence obscured and perpetuated racist aggressions, but where the poet was simultaneously steeped in the cultural traditions of the American south. Her home in Washington, DC, inspires prose poems documenting and critiquing our capital's institutions and monuments, and a stirring suite explores Beasley's affiliation with the disabled community. Bold and intimate, Made to Explode untangles the poet's roots and seeks out resonance in society writ large"--

Wrestling With The Muse

by Melba Joyce Boyd, Wrestling With The Muse Books available in PDF, EPUB, Kindle, Docs and Mobi Format. Download Wrestling With The Muse books, And as I groped in darkness and felt the pain of millions, gradually, like day driving night across the continent, I saw dawn upon them like the sun a vision. —Dudley Randall, from "Roses and Revolutions" In 1963, the African American poet Dudley Randall (1914–2000) wrote "The Ballad of Birmingham" in response to the bombing of a church in Alabama that killed four young black girls, and "Dressed All in Pink," about the assassination of President Kennedy. When both were set to music by folk singer Jerry Moore in 1965, Randall published them as broadsides. Thus was born the Broadside Press, whose popular chapbooks opened the canon of American literature to the works of African American writers. Dudley Randall, one of the great success stories of American small-press history, was also poet laureate of Detroit, a civil-rights activist, and a force in the Black Arts Movement. Melba Joyce Boyd was an editor at Broadside, was Randall's friend and colleague for twenty-eight years, and became his authorized biographer. Her book is an account of the interconnections between urban and labor politics in Detroit and the broader struggles of black America before and during the Civil Rights era. But also, through Randall's poetry and sixteen years of interviews, the narrative is a multipart dialogue between poets, Randall, the author, and the history of American letters itself, and it affords unique insights into the life and work of this crucial figure.

Crows In The Jukebox

by Mike James, Crows In The Jukebox Books available in PDF, EPUB, Kindle, Docs and Mobi Format. Download Crows In The Jukebox books, In his wonderful new collection, Crows in the Jukebox, Mike James explores among many topics, his hardscrabble patriarchy, marriage and family relationships, and the clarity and persistence of nature. As in his other work, he often surprises the reader with jarring quips and closures as in "Talking with Allen Ginsberg, in a Dream:" "I can fit you in my shirt pocket," or the remarkable metaphor for the artistic creative process, "Swimming in the Rain:" "when she swims she's always alone/no one who watches is with her." This volume establishes James as a poet of the first rank, one who swims alone. ~Tim Peeler, author of L2: A Poetry Novel

The Cosmic Lady Was Right

by Marshall Motz, The Cosmic Lady Was Right Books available in PDF, EPUB, Kindle, Docs and Mobi Format. Download The Cosmic Lady Was Right books, No ordinary memoir, this book aspires to be more than a mere exercise in narcissism. A street person in a zany California beach town at the end of the author's days provides the theme: planet Earth is the Galaxy Lunatic Training Asylum upon which each of us has been planted with one purpose, namely to rise from the stupidity and the darkness around us into the light, to regain in fact our sanity. Mama Earth is really tired of it all, the Lady opines, and recommends a journey inward. Taking a literary look back at his life, he sees she was right. In a series of poignant vignettes, it becomes clear that he and the whole country have been progressively descending into hopeless lunacy. Ah but theres more; there's an agend here. It seems its all been a macho ego trip---the whole of human history in fact---an unfortunate male mistake, a mere prelude to the new paradigm, the return of the goddess---meaning the spiritual androgyny that Jesus talks about in the Gospel of Thomas. We need to restore the balance between male and female. In a hilarious final chapter set in the aforementioned California city, it all comes together: Mama Earth, the Goddess Sophia and the Cosmic Lady, who is vindicated in an eschatological grand finale. She was right all along.

Elizabeth Bishop In The Twenty First Century

by Angus Cleghorn, Elizabeth Bishop In The Twenty First Century Books available in PDF, EPUB, Kindle, Docs and Mobi Format. Download Elizabeth Bishop In The Twenty First Century books, In recent years, a series of major collections of posthumous writings by Elizabeth Bishop--one of the most widely read and discussed poets of the twentieth century--have been published, profoundly affecting how we look at her life and work. The hundreds of letters, poems, and other writings in these volumes have expanded Bishop‘s published work by well over a thousand pages and placed before the public a "new" Bishop whose complexity was previously familiar to only a small circle of scholars and devoted readers. This collection of essays by many of the leading figures in Bishop studies provides a deep and multifaceted account of the impact of these new editions and how they both enlarge and complicate our understanding of Bishop as a cultural icon. Theories Of Falling

THEORIES OF FALLING is the winner of the 2007 New Issues Poetry Prize. Judge Marie Howe said of THEORIES OF FALLING, "I kept coming back to these poems--the tough lyric voice that got under my skin. Clear, intent, this poet doesn't want to fool herself or anybody else. Desire pushes defeat against the wall, and the spirit climbs up from underground." "Sandra Beasley slices her way down the page with precision and punch. Her haunting 'Allergy Girl' series will set off such an itch, I doubt you'll ever fully recover...This poet leaves us to smolder and ache in small kingdoms where 'even the tame dogs dream of biting clear to the bone.'"--Aimee Nezhukumatathil.
