Medicine Before Science

Medicine Before Science by Roger French, Medicine Before Science Books available in PDF, EPUB, Kindle, Docs and Mobi Format. Download Medicine Before Science books, This book offers an introduction to the history of university-trained physicians from the middle ages to the eighteenth-century Enlightenment. These were the elite, in reputation and rewards, and they were successful. Yet we can form little idea of their clinical effectiveness, and to modern eyes their theory and practice often seems bizarre. But the historical evidence is that they were judged on other criteria, and the argument of this book is that these physicians helped to construct the expectations of society - and met them accordingly. The main focus is on the European Latin tradition of medicine, reconstructed from ancient sources and relying heavily on natural philosophy for its explanatory power. This philosophy collapsed in the 'scientific revolution', and left the learned and rational doctor in crisis. The book concludes with an examination of how this crisis was met - or avoided - in different parts of Europe during the Enlightenment.

Download Using Medicine In Science Fiction books, This book offers a clearly written, entertaining and comprehensive source of medical information for both writers and readers of science fiction. Science fiction in print, in movies and on television all too often presents dubious or simply incorrect depictions of human biology and medical issues. This book explores the real science behind such topics as how our bodies adapt to being in space, the real-life feasibility of common plot elements such as suspended animation and medical nanotechnology, and future prospects for improving health, prolonging our lives, and enhancing our bodies through technology. Each chapter focuses on a single important science fiction-related subject, combining concise factual information with examples drawn from science fiction in all media. Chapters conclude with a “Bottom Line” section summarizing the most important points discussed in the chapter and giving science fiction writers practical advice on how to incorporate them into their own creations, including a list of references for further reading. The book will appeal to all readers interested in learning about the latest ideas on a variety of science fiction-related medical topics, and offers an invaluable reference source for writers seeking to increase the realism and readability of their works. Medical Society; June 16th, 1863 In considering the influence of the war on the popular dif fusion of hygienic truths and the advancement of scientific medicine, we cannot fail to observe the Operations of the organization that has done and is doing much for both - the Sanitary Commission. I do not suppose that any of you have shared the impres sion, sometimes encountered, that its function is chiefly to dispense to disabled soldiers articles of hospital food and clothing supplemental to the governmental supplies but I think that I may, perhaps, with advantage, fill a portion of the hour, in calling your attention to those features of its work which entitle it to consideration to-day, while we are discussing the influence of the war on that branch of liberal culture to which we have devoted our lives. Science Technology And Medicine In Colonial India

Medicine Before Science by David Arnold, Science Technology And Medicine In Colonial India Books available in PDF, EPUB, Kindle, Docs and Mobi Format. Download Science Technology And Medicine In Colonial India books, Interest in the science, technology and medicine of India under British rule has grown in recent years and has played an ever-increasing part in the reinterpretation of modern South Asian history. Spanning the period from the establishment of East India Company rule through to Independence, David Arnold's wide-ranging and analytical survey demonstrates the importance of examining the role of science, technology and medicine in conjunction with the development of the British engagement in India and in the formation of Indian responses to western intervention. One of the first works to analyse the colonial era as a whole from the perspective of science, the book investigates the relationship between Indian and western science, the nature of science, technology and medicine under the Company, the creation of state-scientific services, 'imperial science' and the rise of an Indian scientific community, the impact of scientific and medical research and the dilemmas of nationalist science.

Getting It Right In Science And Medicine

Medicine Before Science by Hans R. Kricheldorf, Getting It Right In Science And Medicine Books available in PDF, EPUB, Kindle, Docs and Mobi Format. Download Getting It Right In Science And Medicine books, This book advocates the importance and value of errors for the progress of scientific research! Hans Kricheldorf explains that most of the great scientific achievements are based on an iterative process (an ‘innate self-healing mechanism’): errors are committed, being checked over and over again, through which finally new findings and knowledge can arise. New ideas are often first confronted with refusal. This is so not only in real life, but also in scientific and medical research. The author outlines in this book how great ideas had to ripen over time before winning recognition and being accepted. The book showcases in an entertaining way, but without schadenfreude, that even some of the most famous discoverers may appear in completely different light, when regarding errors they have committed in their work. This book is divided into two parts. The first part creates a fundament for the discussion and understanding by introducing important concepts, terms and definitions, such as (natural) sciences and scientific research, laws of nature, paradigm shift, and progress (in science). It compares natural sciences with other scientific disciplines, such as historical research or sociology, and examines the question if scientific research can generate knowledge of permanent validity. The second part contains a collection of famous fallacies and errors from medicine, biology, chemistry, physics and geology, and how they were corrected. Readers will be astonished and intrigued what meanders had to be explored in some cases before scientists realized facts, which are today’s standard and state-of-the-art of science and technology. This is an entertaining and amusing, but also highly informative book not only for scientists and specialists, but for everybody interested in science, research, their progress, and their history!

Science And Practice Of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine

Medicine Before Science by Derek S. Wheeler, Science And Practice Of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Books available in PDF, EPUB, Kindle, Docs and Mobi Format. Download Science And Practice Of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine books, The ? eld of critical care medicine is in the midst of a dramatic change. Technological and s- enti? c advances during the last decade have resulted in a fundamental change in the way we view disease processes, such as sepsis, shock, acute lung injury, and traumatic brain injury. Pediatric intensivists have been both witness to and active participants in bringing about these changes. As the understanding of the pathogenesis of these diseases reaches the cellular and molecular levels, the gap between critical care medicine and molecular biology will disappear. It is imperative that all physicians caring for critically ill children in this new era have a th- ough understanding of the applicability of molecular biology to the care of these patients at the bedside in order to keep up with the rapidly evolving ? eld of critical care medicine. To the same extent, the practice of critical care medicine is in the midst of fundamental change. In keeping with the Institute of Medicine’s report “Crossing the Quality Chasm,” the care of critically ill and injured children needs to be safe, evidence-based, equitable, ef? cient, timely, and fami- centered [1,2]. In the following pages, these changes in our specialty are discussed in greater scope and detail, offering the reader fresh insight into not only where we came from, but also where we are going as a specialty.

Neurosurgery Before Science

Medicine Before Science by Jeremy C. Ganz, Neurosurgery Before Science Books available in PDF, EPUB, Kindle, Docs and Mobi Format. Download Neurosurgery Before Science books, It has become increasingly clear that it is easy to misunderstand how surgery functioned in the past. It is all too easy to regard our ancestors as less privileged than ourselves, whereas they were probably every bit as intelligent, but with a different set of priorities. This book traces the development of the profession of surgery and the preoccupations and concerns of its practitioners, from Hippocrates to the early nineteenth century. Topics discussed here include the personal characteristics of surgeons and the regulation of the practice of surgery. The study of anatomy and its limitation by political and philosophical taboos is also considered, while common procedures without merit such as bloodletting or trepanning are analysed. The illogical myth of laudable pus is examined in some detail, as are the modern conceptions of surgical infection in times past. The book’s main concern is to demonstrate the profession’s resistance to new ideas, preferring the comfort of accepted notions even if the evidence confounds them.
