Download Plotinus Porphyry And Iamblichus books, These essays are devoted to Neoplatonism and especially to Plotinus and Porphyry. They deal with Plotinus' development of the Platonic Forms, and include a lengthy assessment of Porphyry's contribution to the Platonic tradition. Topics covered include the importance of practical ethical activity, Plotinus' speculations on time and eternity as well as his observations on human consciousness. A closer examination of the role of religion, magic and myth in the life of the philosopher reveals a much richer and more nuanced appreciation of their importance and highlights the contribution of Iamblichus.

Divination And Theurgy In Neoplatonism

by Dr Crystal Addey, Divination And Theurgy In Neoplatonism Books available in PDF, EPUB, Kindle, Docs and Mobi Format. Download Divination And Theurgy In Neoplatonism books, Why did ancient philosophers consult oracles, write about them, and consider them to be an important part of philosophical thought and practice? This book explores the extensive links between oracles and philosophy in Late Antiquity, particularly focusing on the roles of oracles and other forms of divination in third and fourth century CE Neoplatonism. Examining some of the most significant debates between pagan philosophers and Christian intellectuals on the nature of oracles as a central yet contested element of religious tradition, Addey focuses particularly on Porphyry's Philosophy from Oracles and Iamblichus' De Mysteriis - two works which deal extensively with oracles and other forms of divination. This book argues for the significance of divination within Neoplatonism and offers a substantial reassessment of oracles and philosophical works and their relationship to one another. With a broad interdisciplinary approach, encompassing Classics, Ancient Philosophy, Theology, Religious Studies and Ancient History, Addey draws on recent anthropological and religious studies research which has challenged and re-evaluated the relationship between rationality and ritual.

Freundschaft Im Neuplatonismus

by Michael Schramm, Freundschaft Im Neuplatonismus Books available in PDF, EPUB, Kindle, Docs and Mobi Format.

The Mysticism Of Saint Augustine

by John Peter Kenney, The Mysticism Of Saint Augustine Books available in PDF, EPUB, Kindle, Docs and Mobi Format. Download The Mysticism Of Saint Augustine books, Augustine's vision at Ostia is one of the most influential accounts of mystical experience in the Western tradition, and a subject of persistent interest to Christians, philosophers and historians. This book explores Augustine's account of his experience as set down in the Confessions and considers his mysticism in relation to his classical Platonist philosophy. John Peter Kenney argues that while the Christian contemplative mysticism created by Augustine is in many ways founded on Platonic thought, Platonism ultimately fails Augustine in that it cannot retain the truths that it anticipates. The Confessions offer a response to this impasse by generating two critical ideas in medieval and modern religious thought: firstly, the conception of contemplation as a purely epistemic event, in contrast to classical Platonism; secondly, the tenet that salvation is absolutely distinct from enlightenment.
